Second year Art students from Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College have produced some excellent artwork for our stations to help mark the 100 year anniversary of the demise of the North Staffordshire Railway in 1923. The themes for the brief were: railway heritage, train travel, local stations, local environment, green travel. Fifteen pieces were made into large posters. All of them are on display at Longton Station. Other copies can be seen at intermediate stations between Crewe and Derby.
The North Staffordshire Railway Company was based at Stoke-on-Trent Station and was responsible for many rail routes across the county, including the Potteries Loop Line. Most of these routes are now closed, but some, such as the Crewe to Derby Line are still open. The NSR was subsumed into the larger London, Midland and Scottish Railway following The Railways Act (aka the Grouping Act) of 1921. At this time many smaller railway companies were merged into just four large companies in order to save money and improve efficiency.
