Longton is the newest and southernmost of Stoke-on-Trent’s six towns, originally laid out as an agricultural village in the thirteenth century. Until the last decade of the 18th century it was known only for its coal mines and iron works, but from the 19th century it developed into a major and prosperous centre for the production of bone china. It’s now a busy shopping and heritage location with an attractively renovated indoor market open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
